Privacy Policy

Welcome to Volto (“Volto”, “we”, “us”, or “our”). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you use our mobile application and website (together, the “Service”). By using Volto, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
1. Who We Are

2. Information We Collect
Account information
When you create a Volto account, we collect:
- Email address
- Username
- Display name
- Password (stored as a secure hash by our authentication provider — we never see your plain-text password)
Optional profile information
To power demographic breakdowns on survey results, you may optionally provide:
- Age range
- Gender
- Country of residence
- Profile photo
This information is entirely voluntary and is only ever used in aggregate — it is never shared at the individual level.
Image moderation.When you upload a profile photo or a survey cover image, the image is automatically scanned for inappropriate content (nudity, graphic violence) using Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch before it is stored and displayed. The image data is sent to Google's API solely for this moderation check; Google does not store or use the image for any other purpose. Images that fail the check are deleted immediately and never made public. Pre-made avatars selected from our built-in library are not scanned.
Sign-in with Google or Apple
If you choose to sign in using Google or Apple, we receive your email address and display name from that provider to create and populate your account. We do not receive your password, payment information, or any other account data from these providers.
Content you create
- Surveys and poll questions you post
- Votes you cast (stored and linked to your account; you can review your full vote history in the app at any time)
- Chat messages you send in poll discussions
- Emoji reactions you give
- Follow connections (accounts you follow and those that follow you)
- Survey views — we record when you view a survey to prevent duplicate vote counting and to display accurate view statistics to survey authors
Device and usage information
We automatically collect basic technical information, including:
- Device type and operating system
- App version
- General usage patterns (features used, screens visited)
Push notification token
If you grant notification permission, your device's push notification token is stored securely so we can deliver activity alerts (such as new followers, votes on your surveys, and mentions) to your device. This token is tied to your account and is automatically removed when you sign out or revoke notification permission. You can disable push notifications at any time in your device settings or from the Notifications section in your profile.
Email communications
When we send you transactional emails (such as email verification or password reset links), we process your email address via our email delivery provider, Resend.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create and manage your account
- Provide the core features of the Service
- Send transactional emails (account verification, password reset)
- Deliver push notifications about activity on your account (if you have granted notification permission)
- Display aggregate demographic breakdowns on survey results
- Scan uploaded profile photos for inappropriate content using automated moderation (Google Cloud Vision SafeSearch)
- Detect and prevent abuse, spam, and fraud
- Improve the app and fix bugs
We do NOT sell your personal data. We do NOT use your data for advertising.
4. Data Processors
We share data only with the following trusted third-party service providers, each bound by strict data processing agreements:

We share data with third parties only to the extent necessary to operate the Service. No data is sold or shared for advertising purposes.
5. Data Retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it by law (for example, for tax or compliance purposes).
Survey votes and reactions may be retained in anonymized, aggregate form after account deletion for statistical purposes. Chat messages you send are hard-deleted immediately when you delete them in-app. All remaining messages are deleted when your account is deleted.
6. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate data
- Deletion — request deletion of your account and personal data
- Objection — object to certain types of processing
- Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format

7. Data Security
We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including TLS encryption in transit and AES-256 encryption at rest via Supabase. However, no system is completely secure — please use a strong, unique password for your Volto account.
8. Children's Privacy
Volto is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately at support@voltoapp.com and we will delete it promptly.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we will notify you via email or an in-app notification. The updated policy will be posted at voltoapp.com/privacy with a revised effective date.
Continued use of Volto after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
